SK hynix’s labor union voted on September 16 to approve a revised wage and profit-sharing agreement that shifts more of the company’s record semiconductor bonuses into workers’ pockets as cash — ending months of contentious negotiations ahead of the Chuseok (Korean harvest holiday, roughly equivalent to Thanksgiving) holiday.

What happened

After a first tentative deal was struck down — rejected by a razor-thin margin of just 25 votes — SK hynix’s labor and management returned to the table and produced a revised agreement that cleared a two-day union ballot on September 15–16, 2026, with 57.08% approval (8,731 votes in favor). The key change: the cash share of the PS (profit-sharing bonus, paid out of a portion of the company’s operating profit) rises from 40% to 50%, while the stock portion falls from 60% to 50%. Workers also gain finer-grained control — they may now elect to receive additional stock in 10% increments, up to 100% in stock if they prefer. Separately, the agreement codifies that wages may be deferred if SK hynix posts a net loss. In a sign of how strong this semiconductor cycle has been, the two sides also scrapped the previous PS cap, which had limited the bonus pool to 10% of operating profit from last year.

Why Korea does it this way

South Korea’s large conglomerates, known as chaebol (family-controlled industrial groups that dominate the economy), typically negotiate wages and profit-sharing annually through a formal labor-management process enshrined in the Trade Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act. At chip companies like SK hynix, a major portion of variable pay is tied to the PS pool — a mechanism that links worker income directly to company performance, smoothing boom-bust cycles. Paying part of the bonus in company stock, rather than all cash, is a way management aligns worker and shareholder interests and conserves cash during investment-heavy capex cycles — a consideration especially relevant for an HBM (High Bandwidth Memory, the specialized chips stacked next to AI accelerators in Nvidia and similar systems) buildout that requires billions in fab spending.

What it means for you

SK hynix workers: The practical effect of the 10-percentage-point cash shift depends on total PS. SK hynix has not publicly disclosed this year’s PS payout amount; check the company’s IR releases for the confirmed figure. Workers who previously received 40% in cash now receive 50%, with the remaining 50% in shares they can hold or sell subject to any lock-up conditions in the full agreement.

Investors in Korean equities: SK hynix (listed on the Korea Stock Exchange, ticker 000660) is a top-weight component of the KOSPI (Korea Composite Stock Price Index, the main Korean stock benchmark) and key index-linked funds. The removal of the PS cap means bonus costs will scale with profit in boom years — a higher labor cost line in strong quarters. The wage-deferral clause in loss years offers some downside protection. This is a confirmed settlement; no outstanding labor dispute overhang remains heading into the Chuseok trading lull.

Global AI supply chain watchers: SK hynix is the world’s leading HBM supplier. A resolved labor agreement removes near-term production uncertainty at Icheon and other facilities, keeping HBM delivery schedules on track for AI accelerator customers.

Watch next

  • Signing ceremony before Chuseok (Chuseok falls on October 6, 2026): The formal signing of the final agreement is expected in the days before the holiday. Confirmation will lock in exact PS payout amounts and any remaining terms — watch SK hynix’s IR page or Korea Exchange disclosures for the filing date.
  • SK hynix Q3 2026 earnings release (date not yet set — typically late October): The first quarterly report under the new agreement will show the PS accrual impact on operating costs. If HBM shipment volumes or average selling prices shift materially, the uncapped PS pool size will move accordingly.
  • Samsung Electronics wage talks (ongoing as of September 16, 2026): Samsung’s union has been in a prolonged dispute over its own PS structure. If Samsung settles on terms similar to the 50/50 cash-stock split, it would signal an industry-wide shift in how Korea’s chip giants compensate workers during the AI boom.
